The Governor's Fishing Opener has been a major spring event to celebrate the walleye fishing opener in Minnesota since 1948. Governor Luther Youngdahl initiated this event. The 1948 opener was a cooperative tourism promotion event between public officials, states media and the resorts industry. Each year 2 million anglers fish Minnesota waters making fishing a major contributor to the states $10 billion tourism industry. The Minnesota Governor's fishing opener has more than a half century of successes, due in large part to the efforts of volunteers in host communities and the attention given to the event by local, state, regional and national media. The MN Governor's fishing opener has become a spring trademark.

This years host - Crane Lake - will continue the tradition of successful openers. We invite you to spread the word about this beautiful area of Northern Minnesota.  Its beauty, residents and rich history provide endless stories of interest. Here are just a few. Enjoy!
