People have been leaving behind records of their existence since time began. Ancient residents of the Crane Lake area are no different. Early residents and visitors to the area have left messages for those who follow in the form of pictographs on the rocky shorelines. The meanings of the pictographs is still open to personal interpretation but the Vermillion hand prints and animal shapes will not fail to make you wonder what the picture stories are trying to convey. Crane Lake area pictographs are found in two locations...the Namakan Narrows and the famous "painted rocks" of Lac la Croix.
