Most people have the best luck later at night, usually somewhere between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. That is when the sky is darkest, and stronger displays often stand out a lot better. If you are serious about seeing them, this is not really a sunset activity. It is more of a stay-up-late, keep-checking-the-sky kind of thing.
