Handbergs Marina Crane Lake

4th Generation Full Service Marina on Crane Lake

Handberg’s Marina on Crane Lake is a 4th generation, family-owned outfit that specializes in just about everything. Owners Jeff and Lori Sanborn run the marine service and sales business with their oldest son John, and youngest son Scott both working with them. “It’s been great to have both sons here working with us,” says Lori. “John just got back from 5 years in the marine corps, and Scott has plans to work in Alaska as well as the family business here. Who knows, but we’re hoping that Handberg’s will someday be a 5th generation establishment. We feel more like caretakers of that tradition than owners,” mentions Lori.

Marine Service and Sales

The heart of their business is marine service and sales, featuring brands such as Yamaha, Johnson, Crestliner, Polarcraft, as well as a number of pontoon brands. They were a Johnson outboards dealer on the lake since 1926, and have carried that tradition forward to include service work as well. “We see about everything and need to be able to fix it,” mentions Lori. “From skeg welding and prop service, to lower unit and general engine service, we try to do it all for folks that might run into problems on vacation up at the lake.”

Rocks and hazards abound in the many narrows, reefs, and entryways to other lakes throughout the Voyageur’s National Park area, so the lone boat dealer and service center on the connected lakes is well equipped to help. As local residents and folks that enjoy the area, they can also help by suggesting some lakes to check out and places to lake-tour as well. With that much family experience, feel free to pull up to the dock and ask a few questions.

Convenience Store With Gas, Groceries, Bait, and Famous Ice Cream!

While you’re there, you can gas up your boat, get live bait, or drop in for some basic groceries and convenience store items. Worms, leeches, and minnows are available, along with some basic tackle items that are proven in the area. Hot dogs, brats, and some light grocery items are available for those looking to stock-up the cabin or just get some lunch.

Probably the most popular item at Handberg’s however, is the ice cream. Folks come from all over the area to enjoy an afternoon treat, and it’s a great excuse to take the boat out and do some exploring. If you’re up enjoying the ATV’ing, a Voyagaire Houseboat, or just checking out the area, Handberg’s also offers boat and kayak rentals to help get you on the water.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, Handberg’s has also installed a plexiglass partition between the food service and ice cream areas to be sensitive to those at-risk. “We want our guests to feel welcome and make sure our staff wear masks and offer space to visitor’s also wearing masks,” says Lori. “We’re looking to help people have a great time up here, and we’ll do that however we can.”

From ice-cream to outboards, Handberg’s is one of the many places on the lake to offer a variety of comfort items and service to those looking to enjoy the greater Crane Lake area.
