Places To Relax

Vermilion River Greens

Spend a leisurely day playing 9-holes at this scenic golf course. Vermillion River Greens is a public course that offers a great view and an even better course that can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. The on site tavern allows you to make this an all-day visit.

Indian Island

A small island located on Crane Lake, Indian Island provides visitors with a peaceful retreat and an excellent opportunity for some casual exploration and relaxation. Accessible only by boat, this island is great for laying out, picnicking, swimming, and birdwatching.

Bear Island

One of the smallest islands accessible on Crane Lake, Bear Island is another area accessible only by boat where visitors can relax and enjoy a day on the lake. Walking the island, fishing, birding, or just sitting back and doing nothing are all options on this tiny,  scenic spot.

Mukooda Lake

Located near Crane Lake within Voyageurs National Park, Mukooda Lake is a small lake known for its clear waters and excellent fishing opportunities. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery at this quaint spot.

Namakan Lake

This small island is located on Crane Lake. THis tranquil oasis stands out against the typical woodland scenery of the area. Accessible by boat, this island is a great place to sit back and enjoy both the sun and the stars.

Crane Lake Nature Trail

An easy, well maintained path that is only 1 mile round trip, the Crane Lake Nature Trail is a great place to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of Crane Lake. All ages can enjoy this low-key scenic stroll.

Beaver Bay

This small bay on Crane Lake is a great spot for a quiet day on the water. Beaver Bay provides a peaceful retreat from the more popular areas of the lake, and allows you to enjoy a day swimming or fishing in solitude.

Meander Lake Picnic Loop

The name says it all, the Meander Lake Picnic Loop is a great place to…well meander. This short 0.2 mile stoll only takes a couple minutes to complete, but is a great spot to walk around, bird watch, and take in the scenery. 

 

Crane Lake Chapel

This picturesque, non-denominational, lakefront chapel offers coffee time on Sunday from 9-9:30. Enjoy a cup of coffee and the views of the lake alongside other members of the community. If you feel inclined, coffee time is followed by their worship hour starting at 9:30.

 

Grassy Bay Cliffs

Experience the awe-inspiring Grassy Bay Cliffs, located on Sand Point Lake within Voyageurs National Park. Accessible only by boat, this secluded spot offers a perfect retreat into nature’s tranquility. Casareto Summer Cabin

Johnson Lake

just west of Crane lake is Johnson Lake. This smaller lake has clear water and is accessible to the public on the south shore. This is a great spot to fish for the afternoon, or just enjoy more of the beautiful northern MN scenery.

Getting to Crane Lake:

Out-Of-State Travelers: 

For our out-of-state friends who are looking to travel to northern Minnesota to visit the beautiful Crane Lake, we recommend flying into Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport (MSP). From MSP, it is approximately 4 ½ hours to drive to Crane Lake. MSP to Crane Lake is approximately 275 miles.

In-State Travelers: 

For our fellow Minnesotans who are looking for an in-state getaway, Crane Lake is a great option for you. 

  • Grand Rapids: Grand Rapids is around 100 miles from Crane Lake. If you live in the Grand Rapids area it should take approximately 2 hours to get to Crane Lake. 
  • Duluth: Duluth is around 150 miles from Crane Lake. From one waterfront town to another, this drive will take you approximately 2 ½ hours. 
  • Grand Forks/Fargo: The Grand Forks/Fargo area is under 300 miles from Crane Lake. From this area, it will take approximately 4 ½ – 5 hours to drive to Crane Lake. 

Minneapolis/St.Paul: The Minneapolis/St. Paul area is around 275 miles from Crane Lake. The drive to Crane Lake from Minneapolis/St. Paul will take approximately 4 ½ hours.

There are many wonderful hiking opportunities around the Crane Lake area for a chance to explore the Minnesota wilderness.
